The Lingerie, Swimwear and Bridal Stores industry has battled through some volatile ups and downs in demand. Until 2007, the combination of job growth, lower savings and easy access to credit allowed high discretionary spending, leading to strong sales of specialty apparel like lingerie, swimwear and bridal gowns. This trend quickly reversed in 2008, though, as weak consumer confidence in the economy and low income due to the recession caused consumers to tighten their budgets for nonessential goods, leading demand and sales to fall substantially. Additionally, the level of competition has been intensifying, as online retailers and department stores take sales away from industry retailers. In light of the competitive environment, players will increasingly focus on niche products to boost demand. And as the economy improves, a return to spending will support modest growth as consumers begin to purchase industry products again, including wedding dresses and lingerie. For these reasons, industry research firm IBISWorld has added a report on the Lingerie, Swimwear & Bridal Stores industry to its growing industry report collection.

No visas for salesmen in Saudi Arabia's lingerie shops

Saudi Arabia's labour ministry has suspended visas for foreign salesmen at all lingerie and cosmetics shops to pressurise business owners to employ Saudi women in these stores. Fahd Al-Takhifi, Assistant Undersecretary for Development at the Ministry of Labour, said the ministry will continue to allow these companies to employ males in other positions.

According to the report, business owners have until June 27 to employ Saudi women in all cosmetics shops, as is currently the case with lingerie shops. The ministry is considering proposals to ensure Saudi women are also employed at perfume shops and in other female-related commercial activities, Al-Takhifi was quoted by Saudi Gazette as saying.
